Uruguay striker Luis Suarez appears to bite Giorgio Chiellini during heated World Cup 2014 match with Italy in Natal

Luis Suarez was embroiled in fresh controversy when he appeared to bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's final World Cup 2014 group game.

In a heated second half which had seen Italy's Claudio Marchisio sent off for a high tackle, the Liverpool striker was seen to move his head towards Chiellini and seemed to press his mouth into the defender's shoulder.

Suarez then fell to the floor holding his face, as Chiellini complained to Mexican referee Marco Rodriquez, who did not penalise either player.

Moments later Diego Godin scored to give Uruguay the lead in a game they needed to win to progress to the round of 16 and eliminate Italy.

Suarez has twice bitten opponents previously. The first occasion was when he was at Ajax

In April last year he was banned for 10 games by the Football Association after, playing for Liverpool, he bit Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League game.

Diego Godin’s header ensured Uruguay progressed to the knock out stages of the World Cup as runners up in Group-D (group of death) with a 1-0 victory over Italy at the Estadio das Dunas in Natal, but the result is likely to be overshadowed after Luis Suarez appeared to bite an opponent for the third time in his career.

Dutch paybacks Spain for FIFA World Cup 2010 Finale loss

SALVADOR (Brazil): Dutch captain and forward Robin van Persie added insult to the Spanish team's injury saying they could have beaten the defending champions by seven or eight goals in their World Cup opener on Friday.

The Manchester United forward expressed his happiness after his national team thrashed Spain 5-1 in the first round of the World Cup, noting that his side could have defeated the latter by "six, seven, or eight goals", reports EFE.

"We never stopped going and in my opinion it could have been six, seven or eight goals," Van Persie said.

Van Persie scored a stunning header in the 44th and shared a high-five with head coach Louis van Gaal.

"The pass from Daley Blind for Van Persie was fantastic, the finish was great. This is a nice start, but we have nothing. If we do not win our next game against Australia we have made no progress, but now we are obviously in a good position," Van Gaal said.

"There was so much feeling. If you can make a goal in that way it's great...really fantastic. It was great that he (Van Persie) came to me. That is a sign of appreciation and that appreciation is mutual," he added.
SAO PAULO: The human marionette, Neymar, has set the World Cup alight as only he could have. Not just aided by an over-zealous Japanese referee who yanked the game away from the Croatians and handed it to the home side, but more with his glorious timing and sense of occasion that grand heroes make their entry with.

With his two goals and an emphatic display of all-round intent and drive, Neymar has embraced the hopes of an entire nation. Suddenly, the hesitancy of a nation weary of the World Cup with all its baggage and ghosts vanished in an instant, making everything lighter and free from shackles. It came with his dash, hunger and balance.

Each time the 22-year-old scored, fireworks went off, not in the stadium but in the suburbs of the neighbouring Itaquera area.

The connection was mutual and surreal. Suffice to say, Neymar carried his team against Croatia on Thursday - with a little help from his friends and Oscar - but at the end of regulation time, he was carrying an entire nation on his slender shoulders. Thiago Silva may be Luiz Felipe Scolari's appointed captain but Neymar has carried out a bloodless coup, becoming the Selecao's leader, driver and enforcer all rolled into one.

What a difference a homecoming can make. Gone was the tentative, uncertain Neymar of the season past who flitted in and out of the Barcelona line-up, quietly resigned to playing second fiddle to Leo Messi, sometimes even to Alexis Sanchez and Pedro.

Today, he is being anointed Brazil's Moses. No one was itching more to get going. No one more fidgety as the teams lined up before kick-off. For a second, the close up camera lingered on his face and the mannish-boy turned away, averting his eyes and hiding his face with a swipe of his hand.

What went unnoticed in the din of Brazil's opening win was that this was Neymar's World Cup debut game. He has already scored more goals in his first World Cup match than Lionel Messi has done in eight games. In his third World Cup here, England's Wayne Rooney is still looking for his first goal.

Alex Bellos, author of Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life, was quick to point out the significance of Neymar's heroics in the opening win. "When was the last time a Brazilian player scored two in the opening game of a World Cup? 1950," tweeted Bellos in the raucous aftermath of Brazil's win.

He dared to use the '1950' word - at any given time it is a taboo subject in this land. In the current context, it is sacrilege. When Brazil last hosted a World Cup in 1950, they were upset in the Rio de Janeiro final by tiny Uruguay in what has come to be known as the Maracanazo.

It still continues to haunt the Brazilians, but the confident ease with which Neymar has slipped into the role of the ghost-buster makes everyone believe that a new dawn may finally be around the corner - even if 64 years too late.
The first World Cup 2014 red card has been handed out and it just added insult to injury for the 2010 semifinalists, Uruguay, thanks to defender Maxi Pereira, who picked the foul up in the closing moments of the team’s World Cup opening loss to Costa Rica.
With just one minute remaining in stoppage time, Pereira made a terrible challenge to pick up the booking.
He will now watch Uruguay’s next match from the sidelines.
Uruguay is also in penalty trouble with three other players in the book with yellow cards — midfielder Walter Gargano, defender Martín Cáceres and defender Diego Lugano. If either player picks up a yellow card in the group stage, they will also be facing a suspension.

Costa Rica went on to stun Uruguay with a 3-0 victory.

With Franck Ribery ruled out, there's tremendous pressure on Karim Benzema as he spearheads France's campaign in Brazil.

The 26-year-old Real Madrid man, who doesn't enjoy the same reputation he carries at the club level on the international stage, is playing in his first World Cup and this could be his chance to correct that anomaly.

Excerpts from an interview:

After the disappointment of not being picked for the 2010 World Cup, it must be pleasing for you to be in Brazil four years later?

Definitely! It's a dream come true situation for me to be in a World Cup with the France national team. You start playing football with the sole intention of playing for your country and representing the nation in a World Cup. I am fulfilling the dream now. France had a problem in qualifying and you had to play really well to beat Ukraine to win the playoff to be here in Brazil. Yes, we knew it will be tough when we were placed in the same group with the world champions Spain. We came second and had to win the playoff against Ukraine. They won the first leg 2-0 and we had to win it at least 30 to qualify.

It was very satisfying to do exactly that and ensure our participation in the World Cup. But losing Franck Ribery due to injury is clearly a big blow?

Well, it's un fortunate for both Franck and us. He was so keen to play the World Cup, but he picked up this injury at a horrible time. When a player of his calibre is not available, you are bound to feel it. But we are preparing ourselves in the best possible manner and we all know Franck will be with us, supporting all of us, during the tournament. Injuries are part and parcel of a professional footballer's life. It was most unfortunate, especially since it involved one of our best players.

That said, France are in a relatively easier group...

Well, I am aware of the surprises involved in a World Cup. Our coach, the former captain of the World Cup winning 1998 team, Didier Deschamps, had clearly defined what should be our roles during the World Cup. We need to qualify from the group first and for that we need to play three very very good games. Yes, there are no easy games in a World Cup.

You had a fantastic season with your club Real Madrid winning the UEFA Champions League.

That was a great night for all the Madridistas. Two of the teams from Madrid had made all the Madridistas. Two of the teams from Madrid had made it to the finals and we were so close to losing it too! Sergio Ramos kept us in the tie and we played really well to win it in extra time.

That must have boosted your confidence?

Definitely! When you come to the biggest possible tournament with such a success behind you, you feel confident of crossing all the barriers.
Porto Alegre: With one day left for France to open their 2014 World Cup campaign against Honduras, head coach Didier Deschamps Saturday said the team was "ready" for the Group E match.

"It would be ideal for us to get three points, and it will be a help for us to keep ourselves confident," said Deschamps in a press conference, reports Xinhua.

"However, even Spain had lost the first match. "

France have based their team in Ribeirao Preto, northeast from the biggest Brazilian city Sao Paulo.

It's cooler in Porto Alegre and Deschamps thought it would be an advantage for both teams.

"In northern part it's warmer and in southern part it's cooler. but I think cool weather is not a bad thing, it's an advantage because players are suffering in warm weather," Deschamps said.

Only one quarter of French training session was open to the media. The players were divided into four small groups to practice passing after simple heat-ups.

"It will be our first match," said French captain Hugo Lloris.

"We have been spending weeks getting prepared for the match, everyone is ready to play the match."
FORTALEZA, Brazil : Uruguay has left Luis Suarez on the bench for its opening World Cup game against Costa Rica, opting not to risk the star striker's health as he recovers from knee surgery.

Coach Oscar Tabarez fielded strikers Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani in the Group D match at Arena Castelao in Fortaleza.

Joel Campbell leads the attack for the Costa Ricans, while central defender Michael Unama recovered from the flu to make the starting lineup.

Even without Suarez, Uruguay is a big favorite against Costa Rica.

Uruguay: Fernando Muslera, Diego Lugano, Diego Godin, Walter Gargano, Cristian Rodriguez, Diego Forlan, Cristian Stuani, Maxi Pereira, Egidio Arevalo, Edinson Cavani, Martin Caceres.

Costa Rica: Keylor Navas, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Michael Umana, Celso Birges, Oscar Duarte, Christian Bolanos, Joel Campbell, Bryan Ruiz, Junior Diaz, Cristian Gamboa, Yeltsin Tejeda.
MANAUS, Brazil: Mario Balotelli scored with a second-half header Saturday to give Italy a 2-1 win over England at the World Cup.

The Italy striker was left free by his marker Gary Cahill and nodded a cross from Antonio Candreva past goalkeeper Joe Hart in the 50th minute.

Claudio Marchisio scored first for Italy, sending a long shot through a crowded area and past a diving Hart in the 35th. Daniel Sturridge equalized for England two minutes later, tapping in a cross from Wayne Rooney.

The win puts Italy in a strong position to qualify for the second round, and leaves England with plenty to do in its remaining two matches.

In the other Group D match, Costa Rica beat Uruguay 3-1, giving the 2010 semifinalists a similarly difficult task to advance.

Balotelli nearly scored another in first-half injury time, running deep into the area and enticing Hart to come off his line. The Italy striker stopped, looked toward goal and sent a chip over the keeper's head -- only for Phil Jagielka to clear by heading the ball over the bar.

England's attack-minded lineup made frequent runs into the Italy area throughout the match, and came close to scoring several times.

The best of the chances came in the 24th when Danny Welbeck sent the ball across the front of goal but Andrea Barzagli was able to slide in and tip the ball up in the air. Raheem Sterling, who had been running in from the left, jumped for the header but couldn't reach it, letting the ball go past him as he tumbled into the net.

Italy played without the injured Gianluigi Buffon. The 36-year-old Italy goalkeeper, who can play in his fourth World Cup if he is able to recover from an ankle problem, was replaced by Salvatore Sirigu.

The PSG keeper stepped up and made several good saves, but the best may have come in the 77th when he dived to his left to block a free kick from Leighton Baines.

The match was played in the Amazonian city of Manaus, the most exotic of the 12 World Cup venues for this year's tournament. According to FIFA, it was 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) with humidity at a relatively low 61 percent for the match.

While none of the players appeared to be affected by the heat, there was an injury on the England bench when team physio Gary Lewin dislocated his ankle while celebrating Sturridge's goal.

England and Italy were playing each other at the World Cup for only the second time. They also met in the third-place match at the 1990 World Cup, with the Italians also winning 2-1.

IO DE JANEIRO: Two action-filled days into the World Cup here and an interesting trend has emerged. While a Barcelona-dominated Spain were decimated fair and square by a suddenly-rampant Netherlands, the other non-Spanish Barcelona players - many of whom have lived through uncertain seasons, mostly on the fringes of a Messi-centric system - have come into their own after returning to don their national colours and given the centrestage again.

On the opening day, Neymar, who spent most of his season on the Barcelona bench bemused by the absurdity of it all, quickly made the World Cup his own with an epoch-defining performance against Croatia.

A day later, Alexis Sanchez, relegated to the wide right wing at Barcelona and kept away from the decision-making, scored his country's first goal, provided an assist, completed 43 passes and generally called all the shots in Chile's tough win over the doughty Aussies.

The setting couldn't be more forbidding. Needless to say, the whole world and the whole of Brazil in particular, will be watching closely to see how this one unfolds.

Messi has not been having a great time in Brazil, and he's not even begun playing yet. He has been throwing up in training. His coach, Alejandro Sabella, tries to assuage the world's nerves by claiming it is an attack of nerves for the little, big man. That apart, he's being ribbed by Brazilian fans, who want nothing else but a Brazil-Argentina final in the final.

Things are not going well for the little, big man, and he's not even begun playing yet.

Leave him alone, just give him the ball when it starts, say Argentineans. "Oh, he will explode," says Rodrigo Diaz, a teacher. "He, like all of us, is just waiting for it. Do not mistake his aloofness for anything else."

Deep down, even Messi knows the significance of winning in Brazil. Messi needs Brazil's World Cup more than the World Cup needs Messi.

New Delhi: S. Sreesanth while playing for India, showed his dancing abilities on many occassions.Nobody, not even Sreesanth himself, thought that one day he would use these skills to pursue a different career altogether once ousted from cricket field after spot fixing scandal.

He has just completed the shooting of TV dance reality 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa' which will be aired from June 7.
Sreesanth  recently shot for a promotional video for the show which is surely grabbing the eyeballs of the viewers.

To give his best shot to his new stint as a dance show contestant, Sreesanth plans to shift base from Kerala to Mumbai for the coming 3-4 months.

The promo of the show has a cheerful Sreesanth, dressed in a bright blue jacket and denim jeans, dancing to the tunes of the Jhalak Dikhhla Ja theme song.

The show, which is all set to go on air in June, will be judged by Madhuri Dixit, film-maker Karan Johar and choreographer Remo D'Souza.

After months of negotiations, Sreesanth, who faces a ban from playing cricket, agreed to become a part of the show only to fulfil his passion for dance.

Known to be a break-dance enthusiast, Sreesanth was well-known to break into gigs on the field soon after some victorious achievements.

Sreesanth's entire focus currently is to win the dance reality show, and he says if he wins it would be like winning the World Cup!

Neymar was left in tears after a disabled boy was brought onto the pitch to meet his heroes during training on Thursday.
Punjab yet again buried CSK under a mountain of runs, scoring a mammoth 226 for six. It is third time that Punjab scored more than 200 runs against CSK.

"I had the belief in my bowling that they will let them score more than 200 runs. But we need to give them (Punjab) credit, they batted well," Dhoni said.
Dhoni said they surely had a chance to win after Suresh Raina came up with a stunning knock of 87.

"It was something we could have achieved, the reason for that is the way Suresh batted. In the middle overs there was some very irresponsible cricket by some of the most experienced international cricketers. We couldn’t make such mistakes in a game where the stakes were high," said the CSK skipper.

"One of the facts is one of our retained players, Dwayne Bravo we lost at the start itself, but we still made the playoffs, we did really well in the tournament," he added.

SEVILLE, Spain :  Spain coach Vicente del Bosque says winger Jesus Navas is unlikely to play at the World Cup.

Navas helped Spain win the World Cup four years ago but was sidelined over the close of the season by an ankle injury.

Del Bosque says the Manchester City forward was "better, in nearly perfect condition but after two months without any training means we'd like to bring someone who is in better shape."

Del Bosque, speaking after a 2-0 friendly win over Bolivia on Friday, was optimistic striker Diego Costa could be available but will not commit to the Atletico striker before Saturday, when the 23-squad list is released.

The Spain coach says midfielder Ander Iturraspe and fullback Alberto Moreno would not be in Brazil despite making the initial list.
The Hague: India’s shaky defence conceded a goal 15 seconds from the hooter to go down 2-3 against Belgium in their opening game of hockey World Cup at the Kyocera Stadium, here today.

The Indian defenders allowed space inside the circle to the Belgians, who were frustrated and under pressure after being tied 2-2 going into the final minute of play.

The last-gasp attempt by Belgium saw the ball being switched around to leave the Indians confused and John-John Dohmen managed to push ball over the goal-line in a scrimmage.

The last-minute goal undid India’s good show in the second session when they rallied from a one-goal deficit to lead 2-1 to the surprise of the crowd comprising overwhelmingly of Belgium supporters.

Belgium took the initial lead in the 34th minute through Florent van Aubel before India scored two field goals through Mandeep Singh (45th minute) and Akashdeep Singh (50th).

Belgium equalised on a set-piece penalty corner conversion Simon Gougnard in the 56th minute and India created a openings at the other end before Dohmen got the final-minute winner.

Belgium dominated the game from the beginning, pushing Indian players to fall back into their half to strengthen the defense.

The Indian defence did well to deny the rival strikers many shots at the goal. P.R. Sreejesh played an outstanding game under the bar and blocked two goalwards shots before being beaten by a deflection just one minute before half-time.

Arthur van Doren’s diagonal ball into the circle was deflected by van Aubel into the right corner of the Indian goal past the outstretched arm of the custodian.

The Indian team felt the ball had gone off van Doren’s foot and sought a video review, but the goal was upheld after being reviewed twice and Belgium went into the second half was a 1-0 lead.

The Indians failed to mount many raids as they seemed to effortlessly give the ball away after defending stoutly, which enabled the Belgians to keep mounting regular attacks.

The run-outs of Suresh Raina and Brendon McCullum saw Chennai Super Kings lose momentum when chasing the huge target set by Kings XI Punjab in the IPL Qualifier 2, said CSK’s coach Stephen Fleming after his side lost by 24 runs at the Wankhede Stadium.

“We did not feel we were out of the game and certainly the first six overs showed how good the pitch was. Tough chasing that amount of runs over a period of time you are going to get setbacks but there’s no doubt those two runs outs were instrumental in our losing our momentum,” said Fleming after his side ended at 202 for seven chasing KXIP’s ground record score of 226 for six.

“We lost Suresh and the run out of Brendon were two key moments of the game, that’s why we stuttered during middle and later parts of the chase. They also bowled well, bang on target. It was tough for bowlers as 420-odd runs were scored.  Their execution was better than us,” said the former Kiwi skipper after his side failed to make it six out of seven finals in IPL history.

Raina belted 6 sixes and 12 fours in a knock of 87 in 25 balls before he was run out brilliantly by rival captain George Bailey off the first ball post powerplay, which yielded 100 runs.

New Zealand captain McCullum, who is known for big hitting, was run out six overs later for 11 and from then on the Super Kings were left to play catch-up though captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni tried his best making an unbeaten 42 in 31 balls that narrowed the margin of defeat.

“We lost wickets at regular intervals once we lost Suresh (Raina). It’s very hard, the pressure of chasing a big target and you really need a big partnership of substance and a very big score. 85 (in fact 87) was a wonderful score, but we probably needed 140 out of Suresh and the other guys to bat around them. He could have won the match for us quite easily if he been around for 3-4 more overs,” he added

Chennai Super King’s Suresh Raina is among the few batsmen who set the stands on fire during the current edition of IPL
His Amazing inning against Kings XI Punjab in the qualifier 2 Friday almost sealed the final birth for CSK. So who is behind his cracking form? If latest news reports are to be believed Suresh Raina and Bollywood actress and daughter famous film actor Kamal Hassan, Shruti share a special relation.
It was rumoured that Rania considered Shruti as his lucky mascot.  The rumour died after Shruti's visible absence from the cricket field during IPL 20

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kings XI Punjab's wonder boy Glenn Maxwell have been the most searched 'Man of the Match’ players in this season's Indian Premier League (IPL).Chennai Super Kings was also the most searched team besides Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. The four teams have also qualified for the IPL play-offs.
