Uruguay striker Luis Suarez appears to bite Giorgio Chiellini during heated World Cup 2014 match with Italy in Natal

Luis Suarez was embroiled in fresh controversy when he appeared to bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's final World Cup 2014 group game.

In a heated second half which had seen Italy's Claudio Marchisio sent off for a high tackle, the Liverpool striker was seen to move his head towards Chiellini and seemed to press his mouth into the defender's shoulder.

Suarez then fell to the floor holding his face, as Chiellini complained to Mexican referee Marco Rodriquez, who did not penalise either player.

Moments later Diego Godin scored to give Uruguay the lead in a game they needed to win to progress to the round of 16 and eliminate Italy.

Suarez has twice bitten opponents previously. The first occasion was when he was at Ajax

In April last year he was banned for 10 games by the Football Association after, playing for Liverpool, he bit Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League game.

Diego Godin’s header ensured Uruguay progressed to the knock out stages of the World Cup as runners up in Group-D (group of death) with a 1-0 victory over Italy at the Estadio das Dunas in Natal, but the result is likely to be overshadowed after Luis Suarez appeared to bite an opponent for the third time in his career.

Dutch paybacks Spain for FIFA World Cup 2010 Finale loss

SALVADOR (Brazil): Dutch captain and forward Robin van Persie added insult to the Spanish team's injury saying they could have beaten the defending champions by seven or eight goals in their World Cup opener on Friday.

The Manchester United forward expressed his happiness after his national team thrashed Spain 5-1 in the first round of the World Cup, noting that his side could have defeated the latter by "six, seven, or eight goals", reports EFE.

"We never stopped going and in my opinion it could have been six, seven or eight goals," Van Persie said.

Van Persie scored a stunning header in the 44th and shared a high-five with head coach Louis van Gaal.

"The pass from Daley Blind for Van Persie was fantastic, the finish was great. This is a nice start, but we have nothing. If we do not win our next game against Australia we have made no progress, but now we are obviously in a good position," Van Gaal said.

"There was so much feeling. If you can make a goal in that way it's great...really fantastic. It was great that he (Van Persie) came to me. That is a sign of appreciation and that appreciation is mutual," he added.
SAO PAULO: The human marionette, Neymar, has set the World Cup alight as only he could have. Not just aided by an over-zealous Japanese referee who yanked the game away from the Croatians and handed it to the home side, but more with his glorious timing and sense of occasion that grand heroes make their entry with.

With his two goals and an emphatic display of all-round intent and drive, Neymar has embraced the hopes of an entire nation. Suddenly, the hesitancy of a nation weary of the World Cup with all its baggage and ghosts vanished in an instant, making everything lighter and free from shackles. It came with his dash, hunger and balance.

Each time the 22-year-old scored, fireworks went off, not in the stadium but in the suburbs of the neighbouring Itaquera area.

The connection was mutual and surreal. Suffice to say, Neymar carried his team against Croatia on Thursday - with a little help from his friends and Oscar - but at the end of regulation time, he was carrying an entire nation on his slender shoulders. Thiago Silva may be Luiz Felipe Scolari's appointed captain but Neymar has carried out a bloodless coup, becoming the Selecao's leader, driver and enforcer all rolled into one.

What a difference a homecoming can make. Gone was the tentative, uncertain Neymar of the season past who flitted in and out of the Barcelona line-up, quietly resigned to playing second fiddle to Leo Messi, sometimes even to Alexis Sanchez and Pedro.

Today, he is being anointed Brazil's Moses. No one was itching more to get going. No one more fidgety as the teams lined up before kick-off. For a second, the close up camera lingered on his face and the mannish-boy turned away, averting his eyes and hiding his face with a swipe of his hand.

What went unnoticed in the din of Brazil's opening win was that this was Neymar's World Cup debut game. He has already scored more goals in his first World Cup match than Lionel Messi has done in eight games. In his third World Cup here, England's Wayne Rooney is still looking for his first goal.

Alex Bellos, author of Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life, was quick to point out the significance of Neymar's heroics in the opening win. "When was the last time a Brazilian player scored two in the opening game of a World Cup? 1950," tweeted Bellos in the raucous aftermath of Brazil's win.

He dared to use the '1950' word - at any given time it is a taboo subject in this land. In the current context, it is sacrilege. When Brazil last hosted a World Cup in 1950, they were upset in the Rio de Janeiro final by tiny Uruguay in what has come to be known as the Maracanazo.

It still continues to haunt the Brazilians, but the confident ease with which Neymar has slipped into the role of the ghost-buster makes everyone believe that a new dawn may finally be around the corner - even if 64 years too late.
The first World Cup 2014 red card has been handed out and it just added insult to injury for the 2010 semifinalists, Uruguay, thanks to defender Maxi Pereira, who picked the foul up in the closing moments of the team’s World Cup opening loss to Costa Rica.
With just one minute remaining in stoppage time, Pereira made a terrible challenge to pick up the booking.
He will now watch Uruguay’s next match from the sidelines.
Uruguay is also in penalty trouble with three other players in the book with yellow cards — midfielder Walter Gargano, defender Martín Cáceres and defender Diego Lugano. If either player picks up a yellow card in the group stage, they will also be facing a suspension.

Costa Rica went on to stun Uruguay with a 3-0 victory.

With Franck Ribery ruled out, there's tremendous pressure on Karim Benzema as he spearheads France's campaign in Brazil.

The 26-year-old Real Madrid man, who doesn't enjoy the same reputation he carries at the club level on the international stage, is playing in his first World Cup and this could be his chance to correct that anomaly.

Excerpts from an interview:

After the disappointment of not being picked for the 2010 World Cup, it must be pleasing for you to be in Brazil four years later?

Definitely! It's a dream come true situation for me to be in a World Cup with the France national team. You start playing football with the sole intention of playing for your country and representing the nation in a World Cup. I am fulfilling the dream now. France had a problem in qualifying and you had to play really well to beat Ukraine to win the playoff to be here in Brazil. Yes, we knew it will be tough when we were placed in the same group with the world champions Spain. We came second and had to win the playoff against Ukraine. They won the first leg 2-0 and we had to win it at least 30 to qualify.

It was very satisfying to do exactly that and ensure our participation in the World Cup. But losing Franck Ribery due to injury is clearly a big blow?

Well, it's un fortunate for both Franck and us. He was so keen to play the World Cup, but he picked up this injury at a horrible time. When a player of his calibre is not available, you are bound to feel it. But we are preparing ourselves in the best possible manner and we all know Franck will be with us, supporting all of us, during the tournament. Injuries are part and parcel of a professional footballer's life. It was most unfortunate, especially since it involved one of our best players.

That said, France are in a relatively easier group...

Well, I am aware of the surprises involved in a World Cup. Our coach, the former captain of the World Cup winning 1998 team, Didier Deschamps, had clearly defined what should be our roles during the World Cup. We need to qualify from the group first and for that we need to play three very very good games. Yes, there are no easy games in a World Cup.

You had a fantastic season with your club Real Madrid winning the UEFA Champions League.

That was a great night for all the Madridistas. Two of the teams from Madrid had made all the Madridistas. Two of the teams from Madrid had made it to the finals and we were so close to losing it too! Sergio Ramos kept us in the tie and we played really well to win it in extra time.

That must have boosted your confidence?

Definitely! When you come to the biggest possible tournament with such a success behind you, you feel confident of crossing all the barriers.
