Uruguay striker Luis Suarez appears to bite Giorgio Chiellini during heated World Cup 2014 match with Italy in Natal

Luis Suarez was embroiled in fresh controversy when he appeared to bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's final World Cup 2014 group game.

In a heated second half which had seen Italy's Claudio Marchisio sent off for a high tackle, the Liverpool striker was seen to move his head towards Chiellini and seemed to press his mouth into the defender's shoulder.

Suarez then fell to the floor holding his face, as Chiellini complained to Mexican referee Marco Rodriquez, who did not penalise either player.

Moments later Diego Godin scored to give Uruguay the lead in a game they needed to win to progress to the round of 16 and eliminate Italy.

Suarez has twice bitten opponents previously. The first occasion was when he was at Ajax

In April last year he was banned for 10 games by the Football Association after, playing for Liverpool, he bit Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League game.
